About this Item
(Hodder & Stoughton nd [1930]]. Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-314 [315-320: ads]. Publisher's original blue cloth, front panel stamped in black and ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in black. A fine copy in a near fine first issue dustwrapper priced 7/6 net to the spine (as called for). First edition, first printing. Science fiction thriller about a scientist who intends to destroy the world with a disintegration ray. "A brilliant entry into the catalogue of inter-war thrillers or 'shockers' as they were known as a tale of mystery, action, suspense and romance" .The plot of 'The Avenging Ray' revolves around a wealthy bachelor's (Gerry Windermaine) visit to Dartmoor, which sees him become entangled with a deranged scientist (Carlo Damian) and his attempts to destroy the earth with a corrosive energy that is transmitted through any conductive wire. Throw in a dependable Scotland Yard man, an incredulous local Bobbie, a Lord of The Manor type and (of course) a beautiful damsel in distress to catch Windermaine's eye, and we have here a fail-safe cast of characters to deliver the goods that were so greatly received by readers in the years after The Great War" (Amazon Review). In Locke and Bleiler. NB: Looking at the entry in A Spectrum of Fantasy it would seem that the late George Locke did not have a first edition, first issue in his collection as his dustwrapper was from the cheap edition (priced 3/6). If the legendary George Locke did not have the first edition first issue must be VERY scarce. Rare with these attributes and in this condition. Superb cover art. (artist unknown). Photographs/scans available upon request. Seller Inventory # 355490723014
