Very minor shelf-wear, remnant of paper label to foot of spine. Very occasional spotting. Inscribed 'D. G. Rossetti' to head of title page. The first edition of a theological treatise by poet Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894), published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, of whom she was an ardent supporter. Divided into two series, 'Creation' and 'Redemption', the book is an exercise in Benedicite criticism and interpretation, a devotional contemplation of select New Testament scripture. The SPCK paid £40 for the manuscript, and proof corrections were completed by midsummer 1879. Published that Autumn, the book, perhaps surprisingly, received a positive response from the Saturday Review - a periodical usually disparaging of her writing and, consequently, referred to by her brother, literary editor William Michael Rossetti (1829- 1919), as the reading-matter of vulgar and idle Clubmen. This copy is inscribed by the author's brother, celebrated Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # AQ25568
