The text follows the first Giunta edition published at Florence in 1522 under the editorship of Antonio Francini, with the text of the plays surrounded by extensive Greek scholia. The bulk of the annotations are in a rapid sixteenth-century cursive and supply interlinear Latin translations and explanations of Greek words, and occasional commentary, to the plays Oedipus Rex, Antigone, Oedipus at Colonus, and Women of Trachis. A few further Latin notes in an eighteenth-century hand of a textual critical nature engage with readings in Electra and Antigone. This was the edition studied by Melanchthon in preparation for the Wittenberg edition; Melanchthon's own copy also bears profuse annotations to the Antigone. Our copy, with annotations to the play in both hands, also evidences the enduring power of the play's central theme of the conflict between positive and natural law. Provenance: 1. The inscription to the title appears to be that of the German philologist Ludolph Georg Lunden (1640 1687) who studied at Helmstedt and ran a school in Celle; his note records that he purchased this volume at Bruneck, South Tyrol, in 1659. 2. Abraham Gotthelf Kästner (1719 1800) was a German mathematician and poet, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1789; the Kästner crater on the Moon is named for him. 3. Spyros Loverdos (1874 1936), Greek banker, economist, politician, and collector, whose library was dispersed after his death. USTC 694180; VD16 S7033; Adams S1443. Seller Inventory # C3735
