Later dark green half calf (original printed front wrapper trimmed and mounted at front), gilt spine, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, 8vo, 127 pp, plus additional leaves at end some with mounted cuttings. 83 entries. A specially bound copy of Harry Buxton Forman's excellent bibliography of Shelley ("Still the best descriptive bibliography of first and early editions" - Reiman; 'marvellously complete and detailed '- John Collins) with an interesting provenance and additional material and enclosures. Laid in is an autograph letter signed from Harry Buxton Forman dated 20 Sept. 1889 to J. R. Tutin thanking Tutin for a book received and advising him that he cannot say when Part II of 'The Shelley Library' will be published (in fact this Part, intended to cover collected editions, never was published). John Ramsden Tutin (1855-1913) was a Hull bookseller, publisher and literary scholar who in 1889 had published a volume of 'Selections from Keats'. Bound in at the end of our volume are several blank leaves, eight of which have mounted press-clippings comprising (1) a piece about the dangers of facsimile reprints; (2) letters (1924) from Thomas James Wise printed in the Times Literary Supplement and The Times warning about forgeries of two Shelley first editions (!) ". The forgeries now circulating have been prepared by taking copies of the very close reprints issued by the Shelley Society to its members in 1886, removing my own introductions, and then rubbing them in dust to impart an appearance of age."; (3) a reply from one E.N. Adler contesting Wise's 'too sweeping' statement about the watermarks of 'Hellas'; (4) a description of a Shelley binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; and (5) an advertisement for sale of 'The Shelley-Rossetti Manuscripts'. Also bound in is a 4-page extract (pp 3-6) from a Bertram Dobell catalogue headed 'A Collection of Books by or relating to Percy Bysse Shelley' (111 items). Booklabel of the Liverpool bookseller Arnold Yates (1900-1971) on front pastedown endpaper - we assume it was he who had the volume bound and added the extra material. Very Good.
