Item description from seller

Original plain wrappers, 8vo, 15 pp. A counterfeit of the rare original Hotten edition, purportedly 1868 but probably produced by the forgers around 1890 and quickly noticed by William Robertson Nicoll as a fabrication (in 'The Bookman , October 1891). In 1894 J.H. Slater discussed the forgery in his "Early Editions" : 'A pirated reprint is occasionally to be met with, and, having been very carefully executed, it is almost impossible to detect it from the original. It is in every respect but one a masterly production, the only apparent defect being in the description of the paper, which it was probably found impossible to match exactly. There is no doubt that many of these forged copies are on the market'. Wise, reviewing Slater's book, poured scorn on his claims. Todd: There are two editions: (1) the genuine six-copy issue, with period in imprint after Piccadilly; (2) this counterfeit, without period. Wrappers a trifle fingermarked and rear wrapper with diagonal crease, otherwise Good. Laid in is a short typescript note dated 2 July 1959 addressed 'My dear Technocrat' discussing in detail some of the typographical problems with the forgery.
