A first edition, first printing of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, published by Hamish Hamilton in 1963. A near fine copy inscribed and dated by a previous owner in black ink to the front free end paper, residue of tape marks to the front and rear free end papers, bumping to the lower edge of front board, red top stain to text block, mild toning and spotting to fore and lower edge of text block. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with fading to the spine and hinge of front flap fold. Silent Spring began with a "fable for tomorrow" a true story using examples drawn from many real communities where the use of DDT, an agricultural insecticide, had caused damage to wildlife, birds, bees, agricultural animals, domestic pets, and even humans. It became an instant best-seller and the most talked about book in decades.
