First UK Edition. Publisher's cream buckram with blue ink lettering and designs on the spine and front board. A short inscription to the front free end-paper (To A.M. Claye, Xmas 1941) and a touch of foxing to the fore-edge else VG+. The VG++ dustwrapper is priced 5/- net to the inside flap (as called for) with miniscule creasing and surface rubbing to the tip and tail of the spine. The spine is age-toned and slightly faded. Overall a much nicer copy than normally seen of Gallico's classic story of friendship set amidst the horrors of World War II. Winner of the 1941 O. Henry Prize and adapted multiple times to film, television, and the stage. N.B: basis for the 1971 BBC adaptation of the same name as well as several narrations by household names accompanied by music. Photographs/scans available upon request.
