First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1965. This is a near fine copy. Issued without the dust wrapper, the pictorial paper-covered boards are slightly worn at the corners and spine tips, with some lifting to the laminate on the front and rear hinges. There is some residue to the front and rear pastedowns (priced accordingly), accompanied by a small previous owner's inscription dated to the year of publication. The text blocks are bright and clean throughout. Overall, this is a near fine copy. The book consists of nonsensical stories and drawings similar to the style of his previous book, 1964's In His Own Write. The name is a pun on the expression "a spanner in the works".
