Das Buch spannt den Bogen von städtebaulichen Konzepten für unsere "posturbane Gesellschaft" über die Rückkehr des Ornaments in der Architektur bis zu beispielhaften Realisierungen von neuen Wohnkonzepten. So finden bei SPLITTERWERK der offene Grundriss von Frank Lloyd Wright, der Raumplan von Adolf Loos oder die Frankfurter Küche von Margarete Schütte Lihotzky ihre zeitgemäße Fortführung in der Grazer Wohnung. Im 21. Jahrhundert werden Wände zu maßgeschneiderten Bildwelten, in denen sich Funktionen on demand zuschalten lassen. Die Erforschung von experimentellen Oberflächen führt SPLITTERWERK zu einer grundsätzlichen Neubewertung des Bildhaften. Die von Robert Venturi und Denise Scott Brown kritisierte "Ente" erfährt eine Wiederbelebung der anderen Art, die zu einem weiteren Paradigmenwechsel in der Architektur auffordert.

About the Author: SPLITTERWERK wurden 1988 in Graz gegründet. Zahlreiche Arbeiten und Aktionen im Grenzbereich Architektur / Kunst, mehrfache Wettbewerbserfolge. Speziell erwähnenswert sind die Wohnbauten Roter, Grüner und Schwarzer Laubfrosch, die große internationale Resonanz hervorriefen.   Die Geschichte der Grazer Formation beginnt Ende der 1980er Jahre nicht als Architekturbüro, sondern als Kommunikationsagentur. Von Anfang an fassen SPLITTERWERK ihre Kommunikationsdesigns als städtebauliche Projekte auf und sich selbst weniger als kontinuierliche Gruppe, denn als wechselnde Forschungs- und Ausführungsteams. Seit 1988 haben unter dem Brand SPLITTERWERK neben Architekten auch Maschinenbauer, Statiker, Verfahrenstechniker, Fotografen, Bühnenbildner, Städtebauer, Designer, Filmemacher, Ingenieure, Philosophen, Historiker und bildende Künstler gearbeitet; Zahlreiche internationale Ausstellungen (u.a. DAM, Bauhaus, Biennalen in Venedig und Sao Paulo) und Preise (u.a. Otto Wagner Städtebaupreis).
