Bishop, title page printed in red and black, original pictorial green cloth, front panel printed in black and gold, spine panel printed in gold, rear panel printed in red, black and gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. First edition in English. A translation of A DAGOI TORONY (1879). Gothic tale of murder, revenge and retribution. Exiled Russian count and his band of wreckers lure ships to their doom on the rocky promontory of an island in the Gulf of Finland using a fake lighthouse in the tower of the mysterious count's island fortress. The evil count, who pretends to be a man of science and an alchemist, worships the Devil and exhorts his flock "to the perpetration of all manner of misdeeds and cruelty." Supernaturalism is rationalized. Not in Hubin (1994). A few mild spots and rubs to cloth, front free endpaper missing, else a very good copy.
