Two volumes, 8vo, pp. [iv], 372; [iv], 296; a very decent, sound and usable set in eighteenth century marbled boards, with new calf spines and title labels; numbering labels adapted from elsewhere. First edition of this classic eighteenth-century travel book. Smollett was caricatured by Sterne in the Sentimental Journey as 'Dr Smelfungus' because of the fault-finding and misanthropic tendencies he revealed in this book. Rothschild 1921.
