Liu Cixin has sold more copies than all other modern Chinese authors of science fiction combined. He expanded his reach to anglophone audiences through this translation and the Netflix adaptation of 2024. The trilogy "is a deeply inventive exercise in world-building, in which a secret Mao-era project to search for extraterrestrial intelligence makes disastrous first contact with a totalitarian government orbiting Alpha Centauri" (SFE).
