Synopsis

Reviews
This stylishly written, well-illustrated resource includes 136 essays and 87 sidebars by nearly 90 writers. Among the topics covered are fishing history, trout species, fly-fishing, spin fishing, ultralight fishing, river and stream habitat, and the "feel" of the sport. Good books are available on all these individual subjects, yet the Almanac supplies a fresh, clear overview of trout fishing as a whole. In addition to contributions from such famous trout fishers as Ernest Hemingway, Herbert Hoover, and Thomas McGuane, the volume includes fine work from Sports Afield staffers Anthony Acerrano and Gerald Almy, whose uniformly clear and friendly prose is full of expert fish-catching advice. There is relatively little material on casting here, but a complementary video will address that topic. An excellent, all-around trout-fishing how-to. John Rowen
