[Chinese History] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (23 x 15cm), pp.[2]; xvi; 266; [4]. Publisher's cream cloth, black gilt-lettered title label to spine, orange typographic dust-jacket. Spotting and toning to textblock edges, toning and light rolling to spine, toning to dust-jacket spine, price-clipped jacket with some slight tearing to edges. Very good. Hughes, former Reader in Chinese Philosophy and Religion at Oxford University, was the author of a number of Sinological studies. At the time of his death, Hughes was working on 'Two Chinese Poets' with Dr. David Hawkes, a former student, revising the manuscript before publication.
