1667, Lugd. Batav. et Roterod., ex officina Hackiana, pp (iv) blanks, (xii) including engraved title page, 377, (xv) index, (iv) blanks, full contemporary vellum, lettered in ink on the spine, contemporary? name in ink on paste-down 'Emanuel de Longo Vado', eighteenth century owner's name in ink on the free endpaper. This is the only surviving work of Nepos, who was born near Verona circa 110 BC, and consists of biographical descriptions of Roman and Greek kings, generals, lawyers, orators, poets, historians and philosophers. The first edition was printed by Nicolaus Jenson, in Venice in 1471. Coincidental with the publication of this edition in Leiden, the Netherlands, in June 1667 the Dutch navy knocked the stuffing out of the English warships laid up in the Medway, and sailed off with the flagship of the English fleet, HMS Royal Charles, in what is considered one of the worst defeats in the Royal Navy's history. Indeed, Samuel Pepys said, "And, the truth is, I do fear so much that the whole kingdom is undone, that I do this night resolve to study with my father and wife what to do with the little that I have in money by me."
