First edition, first printing. Three volumes. Contemporary full calf, with gilt titles to red morocco labels and volume numbers to black morocco labels to the gilt decorated spines. A near very good set, the bindings rubbed and nicked, the joints a little fragile but holding. Spine ends a little chipped, particularly to the head of volume I. Volume II is missing its red morocco title label, volume I with black morocco label chipped. The contents, which are lightly foxed throughout are otherwise free from inscriptions or stamps. Page 21 in volume II has a large tear across the lower corner (without loss),the upper corners of pages 3 and 5 in volume III have been torn away removing only one page number. A serviceable example of the uncommon first edition. An account of John Turnbull's five year journey on the Margaret on behalf of the East India Company, which sailed from Portsmouth in 1800, in pursuit of the lucrative fur trade along the northwest coast of America, with Turnbull the business manager of the expedition. Although the journey ended in financial failure, his notes contained observations from throughout the journey, which provided valuable information about the islands of the Pacific, including Norfolk Island, Hawaii, Tahiti, the Tonga Islands, Australia and New Zealand etc. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
