(London: Maclure & Co [1896]). First UK Edition. Oblong 4to (242 x 305 mm). [iv] + 18 pages letterpress followed by 127 fine photogravure plates (including 4 folding panoramas). Publisher's original red cloth with blind-stamped boards with gilt title to the front board. A bright and clean VG++ copy with browning to the end-papers. No inscriptions. The background to this uncommon pictorial publication was the struggle between Czarist Russia and the British Empire for the control of Chitral. This is described in Peter Hopkins' book (The Great Game published in London 1990). He devotes a full chapter 'The Race for Chitral' to the 1895 campaign. The 127 fine plates were produced from photographs taken by Sgt-Major Develin who accompanied the 3rd Brigade as photographer. They include all the geographical features traversed by the 3rd Brigade. A very fine and rare compilation and a nicer copy than normally seen. Looks very smart in its custom-made acetate wrapper.
