One of the most important British architectural pattern books of the Regency & early Victorian period. With Forty Two Plates, 26 hand coloured. First edition, later issue?, folio, [5], (vi-x), [1], 2-34 pp, plus all forty two engraved & aquatint plates, twenty six of which are delicately hand coloured. In contemporary half straight grain green morocco over marbled boards, spine with gilt lettering and rules, pink endpapers, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down, short marginal tear to plate 10. Boards somewhat rubbed, ink name & blind stamp to fep (Ramon Ballivian 1862), text leaves watermarked Smith & Son 1820 or 22, plates J Whatman 1830. All of the views are hand coloured, most of which have the plans for the buildings on the same page. For those plates that are full page coloured views, the plans are on separate, uncoloured leaves. There are two beautiful Welsh structures included; two of Cyfartha Castle in Glamorganshire, and one of 'Farm House near Becon So. Wales'. Overall, a very pleasing copy. (434*290 mm). (Abbey Life 33. Archer 195.1. Bobins 679). Lugar was a practitioner of the Picturesque after the manner of Nash and Repton, working in a wide variety of architectural styles including the 'Grecian', the Tudor Gothic, & that of the cottage ornée as well as the castellated. He was among the first to introduce the picturesquely asymmetrical castle form into Scotland. ODNB. …
