FIRST EDITION. LARGE PAPER COPY (?). 8vo. (23.75 x 14.5 cm). pp.xii+188. Later half calf over original marbled boards, spine with gilt-ruled raised bands and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. 12 hand-coloured aquatinted plates (one of which, the "Tomb of Abélard and Héloïse" bound as frontispiece), 2 uncoloured plates, and one mounted vignette. Inner hinge cracked but still strong, f.f.e.p. detached but present, contents lightly toned, generally a very good copy. Apart from being an antiquarian and romantic traveller, Fellowes (1769 - 1852) observed details of the French social life during the recent political system changes, from absolute monarchy, to republic, Napoleonic Empire and back to the attempt to recreate an absolute monarchy. A second edition of the present work was published by Stockdale in the year, a third edition was published by Thomas McLean in 1820, and a fourth in 1823. (Abbey Travel, 86; Tooley, 212).
