First Rackham edition of Morley's whimsical tale of a dog's search for the meaning of life. "Arthur Rackham. has here found a theme which exactly suits his style, and his style exactly suits the theme - he is one of the few artists, in fact, whose insight and imagination could match Mr Morley's delicate art" (The Sphere). Latimore & Haskell note that "many believe that this edition with the Rackham illustrations was published in 1922, but it was not published until 1925". Latimore & Haskell, pp. 60-61; Riall, p. 154. The Sphere, 26 September 1925, p. 402. Small quarto (247 x 182 mm). Colour frontispiece and 3 colour plates, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Arthur Rackham. Later blue morocco by Zaehnsdorf for E. Joseph, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover with decoration in gilt, spine in compartments, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges.
