Translated by Martin Robinson. First UK edition. 144pp. Hardback in dust jacket (designed by Gerald Cinamon). Margins of first and last few leaves lightly spotted. Two small slits to lower hinge; binding tight and firm. Jacket very slightly soiled and rubbed; price sticker covering the printed price on upper flap. *** A very good copy of this first English edition of La Rochelle's controversial novel about the last 48 hours in the life of a young drug addict, first published in France in 1931. The basis for Louis Malle's film The Fire Within (AKA: A Time to Live. A Time to Die). A great existential novel. Like the hero of this novel, Drieu la Rochelle (1893-1945) died by suicide; not in 1947 as the publisher's bio claims but on 15 March 1945.
