First edition of one of the earliest women's almanacs in the US, printing tables demonstrating wage inequality between the genders and anecdotes relevant to women's rights alongside astronomical ephemerides. It also includes a history of women's rights - implicitly suggesting that rights had not improved since 2000 BCE - along with an overview of action taken since the Seneca Falls Convention. A contemporary of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone (1818-1893) co-founded the Woman's Loyal National League (1863), the Woman's Suffrage Association (1869), and the Woman's Journal (1870), which became the most successful women's newspaper in the country. She was also the first Massachusetts woman to earn a college degree and organized the first National Women's Rights Convention, held in 1850 in Worcester. It is also likely that the Unitarian minister and abolitionist Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was involved in the almanac's preparation. A politician and soldier, he was one of John Brown's Secret Six and a mentor to Emily Dickinson. This almanac is only the second recorded American example explicitly produced for women, following The Lady's Almanac of 1856. Wrappers and contents toned and lightly foxed, a little loss to spine ends and corners, short closed tear to top edge of front wrapper, occasional small marks: in very good condition.
