"The superb typographical plans made by Francis [Meynell] for the Shakespeare were carried out with exemplary skill by Cambridge Unviersity Press, whose quality of machining gave the unillustrated pages a sparkle that did the fullest justice to the designer's careful choice of type" (Dreyfus, p. 50). "The Shakespeare represents the chef d'oeuvre of the Nonesuch Press, and is a model of careful proof reading and imaginative setting. The best of ancient and modern conjectural emendations are unobtrusively set in the margins for the benefit of a glancing eye. Title pages and play headings printed within decorative borders. Original orange niger by A. W. Bain, spines lettered in gilt with list of plays in second compartments, raised bands ruled in blind, twin gilt fillet with star-studded corners ruling covers, gilt and blind rule on turn-ins, top edges brown and gilt on the rough, fore and bottom edges uncut. All except vol. 3 housed in custom white card slipcases. Spines variably sunned, gilt lettering bright, some mottling and discolouration to covers, contents clean. A very good set.
