First edition, 8vo, pp. xxi, [1], 415, [1]; plates and text illustrations, 2 folding maps; publisher's green cloth gilt, t.e.g., unopened; inscribed by Huntington: "That the reader may find in this book something of the pleasure and stimulus to thought which was found in writing it is the wish of the author"; fore-edge of folding map a little worn and soiled, else fine. With a review of the book from the publisher laid in. From the preface: "This book is the record of a journey in Central Asia, and its aim is to illustrate the geographic relation between physical environment and man, and between changes of climate and history." Huntington was a professor of geography at Yale, and President of the Board of the American Eugenics Society. "His work reflected this careful balance of racialized hereditarianism and, at times, quite stark climatic determinism. While his books The Pulse of Asia (1907) and Civilization and Climate (1915) were early elucidations of the connection between historical climatic changes and their possible impact on civilizations, his later work like The Character of Races (1924) attempted to shed light on how racial mixture, natural selection, and migration shape the 'character of races or racial stock.'" Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating relationship between geography and human civilization, using the unique landscape of Central Asia as a compelling case study. The author, a seasoned explorer and scholar, chronicles his journeys across this vast and arid region, from the snow-capped Himalayas to the desolate salt deserts of Lop Nor, drawing upon his firsthand experiences to weave together a captivating narrative. The authorââ â¢s observations lead him to a groundbreaking theory: that climatic changes, rather than simply fixed geographic features, have profoundly shaped the course of history in Central Asia. He demonstrates that periods of increased aridity have led to famine, migration, and the collapse of civilizations, while periods of more plentiful rainfall have seen prosperity and cultural flourishing. The author explores how these cycles of climatic change have impacted the nomadic and agricultural societies that have inhabited the region, explaining the enduring influence of aridity on the character and habits of its people. This book offers a fresh perspective on the intricate interplay between nature and human destiny, providing valuable insights into the forces that have shaped civilizations across time and space. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
