Tales of the wars of our times. London. Printed for Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1829. First edition. In two volumes. [3], vi-vii, [1], 364; [2], 369pp, [1]. Without half-titles. Single prefatory leaf of Vol. I nearly detached from text-block, first leaf of Vol II text working loose, wax soiling to text p.323 without loss of sense. 8vo. Handsomely bound by Henry George of Bath in contemporary calf, black morocco lettering-pieces, gilt. Extremities rubbed. Lightly foxed, occasional spots of marking to margins. Ink ownership inscriptions to blank fly-leaves of both volumes of second work; 'George & Mary Anne / Sherer / Vicarage / Mansfield'. Association copies of two first editions of fiction writing by Moyle Sherer (1789-1869), British army officer and military historian. As a member of the 34th Regiment of Foot Sherer saw action in Portugal during the Peninsular War at the battles of Albuera, Arroyo des Molinos, and Vitoria. He was taken prisoner following the Battle of Maya and removed to France where he spent the next two years. George Moyle Sherer (c.1778-1858), Vicar of Marshfield, Gloucester, brother of Moyle Sherer; he married Mary Anne Wallinger (c.1796-1883) in 1826. Seller Inventory # AQ10925
