Plates [3] all engraved, frontispiece, plus another in the text, and a folding genealogical table.Titlepage engraved vignette. Frontispiece and titlepage lightly spotted and dusty. Text lightly dusty and occasionallylightly spotted. Book block cracked after the front free endpaper. Contemporary calf worn and lightly abraded, boards with edge wear, corners badly bumped with the boards exposed. Poor inappropriate amateur repair to the spine, consisting of a thin strip of lighter calf replacing the original. Evidence of a bookplate removed from the front pastedown. Previous owners name in ink on the front endpaper. Overall, a good reading copy only. William Wykeham ( 1324 - 1404), bishop of Winchester, Chancellor of England. Educated at Westminster; entered royal service about 1347, and was made King's chaplain. He was charged before council at Westminster with corruption and misgovernment during his chancellorship, and was deprived of his temporalities, pardoned by Richard II. The author of this book Robert Lowth ( 1710 - 1787), bishop of London. Apart from the book offered here he also wrote a short introduction to english grammar, 1762, and a new translation of Isaiah in 1778. ESTC T113064 (holdings unavailable 6/2024).
