Add to basket200 x 260 mm., early outline colour, light foxing to margins, otherwise in good condition. An attractive early coloured map of the British Isles published in Matthaus Seutter's 'Atlas Minor', c.1744. The atlas itself is undated but the latest date in the work is 1744. The map is derived from that in his folio 'Atlas Minor' first published in 1720. This is an example of the first state of three that have been identified. Matthaus Seutter (1678-c.1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher in Augsburg where he was born and died. He was apprenticed to Johann Baptist Homann, and his influences can be clearly seen in his work. Although he was Homann's main competitor his work was not largely original. In 1731 he was though named Imperial Geographer to Karl VI. He married three times and had thirteen children! Only four of them joined the firm. His son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter continued the firm after his death. Provenance: Doreen Green 1994; private English collection. Nordenskiold (1979) 283; Shirley (1988) Seutter 3 state 1; Shirley (2004) T.Seu 3a, no. 19.
