Panama Double-page engraved chart with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. First large-scale Dutch chart of the northern Panama coast and the San Blas Islands - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies, but Roggeveen's work was the first to show the whole coastline of North America and the Caribbean. He called this pilot 'Het Brandende Veen' or 'The Burning Fen'; a pun on his name, as 'veen' means 'fen', and a heap of burning fen represents a fire on the coast to guide or warn ships. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. Robijn went on to republish the second edition in 1689, with a third edition appearing in 1698.…

All purchases must be paid for in full unless you have an approved credit account. Credit terms are
settlement within 30 days of the date of invoice, unless specifically agreed otherwise at the time of the
sale. The title of goods does not pass to the purchaser until the invoice is paid in full.
Authenticity & descriptions
The condition of all books has been described; all items are guaranteed to be complete unless otherwise
stated. We only sell genuine antiquarian books, maps, and prints. All items carry a full guarantee as to
their authenticity. A certificate to this effect can be provided on request. Dimensions are given height by
width of the book-block for books, and platemark, or, if this is not possible, printed image, for maps
and prints. Where indicated, original or contemporary colouring (i.e. colouring applied to the print or
map at or about the time of publication) will be so described. All other colouring will be colouring that,
in our opinion, has been added at a later date. All items can be assumed to be in good condition, unless
stated otherwise.
Availability
As our stock is always changing, items in the catalogues may have already been sold; if something you
want doesn¿t appear on the search page, then this is probably the case.
Returns policy
Any item may be returned if you are not happy with it providing we are notified within 7 days of your
receiving it. This does not affect any statutory rights you may have under UK or EU law for returning the
item outside this period. All we ask is that you return the item(s) by the same or similar method to that
in which they were sent to you. Your postage costs and any payment already received will be refunded
immediately on our receipt of the items in the same condition as you received them.

Postage or shipping will be at the customer's expense and the customer will be notified of the exact amount. UK deliveries will normally be sent by Next Day Delivery service. Overseas shipments will be sent by courier with an on-line trackable facility. Unless otherwise instructed, all shipments will be insured in transit at our expense.
