Corners tips with a tiny bit of bare board exposed. Inner hinges with some expert restoration. Rear inner hinge with some separation at gutter fold of endpapers but hinge structure holding well. Slight bit of fraying to cloth along back cover outer rear joint. iv, 322 pages plus 4 pp. publisher's ads (dated March 1, 1850), sewn-in between front pastedown and free endpaper (as issued). Title printed in red and black. Early ownership signature of O. Prescott on title. Very occasional fox mark. Overall a very good example. Housed in a custom half brown morocco and pebbled cloth slipcase, raised spine bands, with chemise. The Scarlet Letter First Edition, with ads dated March 1, 1850 and no preface. Early setting of the text with uncorrected errors: "reduplicate" for "repudiate" (page 21, line 20); "characterss" for characters (page 41, line 5); "mortal" for "moral" (page 100, line 2); "tobelieve" (page 102, line 22); "catechism" for "catechisms" (page 132, line 29); "heaven" for "heavenly" (page 142, line 23); "said" for "answered" (page 189, line 23); "known of it" (page 199, line 4).
