Original colour-lithographed geologic map of the British Somoliland Protectorate (47 x 78 cm), showing the salty or gypseous soil in red, slightly salty or gypseous soil in pink, residual limestone soil in dark grey calcareous alluvium in blue, sandstones and granites in yellow, sandy calcareous soil in pale green, lavas in green, and volcanic debris in turquoise. Provenance: V.H.W. Dowson, with his stamp to verso. Valentine Hugh Wilfred Dowson (1896-1980) was an army intelligence officer and authority on date cultivation who spend the majority of his life in the Middle East and was based in Basra. In very good condition. Major John Anthony Hunt OBE (1906 1986) was a prominent British geologist and colonial administrator known for his extensive work in the British Somaliland Protectorate between 1936 and 1958. In 1943, Hunt was commissioned by the Governor to lead a comprehensive survey of the protectorate. This work, published in 1951 as "A General Survey of the Somaliland Protectorate 1944 1950," became the definitive reference for the region. Hunt's report was so highly regarded that it was famously recommended to new colonial administrators alongside the Bible and the Koran as one of the three essential documents for understanding the territory.
