With its generally mild climate, ancient history, and beautiful, varied landscapes, the nation boasts all the raw materials necessary for a first-rate vacation. In the early twentieth century, advances in transportation drew tourists in droves to France, then the center of modern European art and culture. During these boom years, French railroad companies and tourism organizations hired artists to produce stylish posters of scenic highlights, hoping to lure visitors to their little part of paradise. Today, many of those artists have slipped into obscurity, but nostalgic visions of French splendor still go hand in hand with early twentieth-century European tourism.
