Synopsis

Meg Brannon's wagon has just been hijacked by three bedraggled strangers on their way to Dodge City. On the run from an abusive husband. Meg agrees to share her wagon with Grandma Spicy, Lucy Ann and Laddie as they search for their uncle. When they arrive in Dodge City, they learn that the uncle has died, leaving only a small tract of land to Laddie. Meg trades for another parcel and they build themselves a home, soon to be joined by other women and children in need of a safe place. Harassed by a cattle rancher who wants her land, and in constant fear of the bounty hunter her husband has hired to find her, Meg struggles to maintain her farm. The group starts a road ranch for travelers and sets up a newspaper and post office. Through heartbreak and joy the homestead thrives, leaving Meg to realize that she must find a way to free herself from the past.

About the Author

Irene Bennett Brown is the author of nine books for children, several of which are set in the Midwest. She based Before the Lark loosely on the correspondence of an early 1900s laundress-turned-homesteader whose six-year-old daughter harvested a ton of potatoes. Brown says, "Jocey--child of my imagination--became as real to me as any living person. I could only follow this tough, practical, and enterprising youngster as she met head-on the challenges before her. She had already been doing Gram's work as a laundress, before she tackled running the small Kansas farm on which she's pinned her hopes. Why wouldn't she succeed?" Brown lives in Jefferson, Oregon.

From Booklist

Meg Brennon is the alias that Cassidy Malloy has adopted to keep her abusive husband from finding her. It's 1873, and she has set herself up as an itinerant saleswoman in eastern Kansas when her wagon is stolen by an old woman, Grandma Spicy; a teenage girl, Lucy Ann Voss; and her younger brother, Lad. Meg decides to join forces with this ragtag group, who are searching for the children's uncle. They bond with each other, and when Lucy Ann and Lad find out that their uncle is dead, Meg decides to stay and create a family with them. She buys land from the uncle's partner and takes in his sister-in-law and her four children, too. They try valiantly to eke out a living from the land, but a powerful neighbor interferes, desiring both the land and Meg. The first of four planned books in a series called The Women of Paragon Springs, Brown's vibrant and engaging tale of brave settlers will appeal to Dorothy Garlock fans and leave readers impatiently waiting for the next installment.
