About the Author

Martin was born and grew up in France. He went to Martinique, and shortly thereafter moved to North Carolina, where he became a printer and established a newspaper. He later became a lawyer and a publisher of legal books. He was appointed judge of the Territory of Orleans by James Madison in 1810. In 1815 became a judge of the Louisiana Superior Court.
