Created expressly for those who will work in physical activity fields, this unique text addresses how anatomy affects movement. Kinetic Anatomy makes it easy for future athletic trainers, physical education teachers, kinesiologists, and coaches to learn the fundamentals of anatomy—and to retain their knowledge for future application in advanced courses or on the job.

Kinetic Anatomy lays the foundation for students to learn how anatomy affects movement of the human body. Readers will be able to apply this knowledge in the future as they work with, treat, and train the physically active.

Drawing inspiration from its predecessor, the popular text Living Anatomy, this all-new resource encourages hands-on learning exercises that bring the text to life. Kinetic Anatomy helps students learn anatomy by identifying structures on themselves or fellow students and by observing how the structures move. Nearly 100 of these hands-on exercises provide a tangible framework for understanding the anatomical structures involved in movement and how they function. Enhancing these exercises are abundant visual tools, with 391 quality illustrations and 122 photographs that allow students to visualize anatomy—especially important for courses without access to cadavers.

The text presents the basic vocabulary of anatomy, explaining how a human skeleton is constructed and how it moves. Kinetic Anatomy systematically teaches readers about bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels for the upper extremity, the spinal column and pelvis, the thorax, and the lower extremity.

Never before has learning anatomy been this easy. Kinetic Anatomy is an outstanding introductory resource for those who plan to specialize in any field of exercise or sport science.

About the Author:
Robert S. Behnke, HSD, is uniquely qualified to write an introductory anatomy text that is preeminently user-friendly to students. Retired after 39 years of teaching anatomy, kinesiology, and health, Dr. Behnke has been honored on several occasions for excellence in teaching—including receiving the Educator of the Year award from the National Athletic Trainers' Association. During his 11-year tenure as chair of the NATA Professional Education Committee, he initiated the petition to the American Medical Association that led to the current national accreditation process for entry-level athletic training education programs.

Most of Dr. Behnke's career was spent at Indiana State University, where he was a full professor of physical education. Earlier in his career he spent five years teaching at the secondary level. He had extensive experience as an athletic trainer, both in high schools and at the university level, serving as head athletic trainer at the University of Illinois from 1969 to 1973. He was an athletic trainer for the U.S. men's Olympic basketball trials in 1984 and, during a sabbatical in 1989, served as an athletic trainer for men's field hockey, team handball, roller hockey, gymnastics, and cycling at the United States Olympic Training Center. He has been in demand as a speaker and as an athletic trainer throughout the United States and internationally.

These broad experiences enabled Dr. Behnke to clearly understand the needs of undergraduate students—and to develop an unparalleled grasp of which pedagogical approaches work and which do not. Kinetic Anatomy is the culmination of his unique understanding; it should be a staple in undergraduate courses for years to come.

Dr. Behnke and his wife live in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Review:

”This is a very reader-friendly book that both undergraduate and graduate students will appreciate. Its scope is manageable, but the book does not shy away from complexity where appropriate. This edition adds quite a few improvements and is a worthy addition to the library of any kinesiology student or faculty member.”
David W. Brzezinski, MD, University of Michigan Medical School

“The text is highly recommended for students beginning their study of human anatomy, particularly those students who learn best visually and kinesthetically.”
CAHPERD Journal (review of first edition)
