back to New York newspapers. In 1887 he and his uncle established the Chittenden Ranch in West Texas' Jones County, seven miles northwest of Anson, where he attended a Christmas dance for ranchers and cowboys at the Star Hotel. This was the inspiration for his best-known poem,
"The Cowboys' Christmas Ball," which first appeared in 1890 in Anson's Texas Western newspaper and was later included in Chittenden's first volume of "Ranch Verses" in 1893.
