Lady of the Deep is a novel wrapped in history, romance and mystery. The story begins in 1984, as the Rev. Dr. Jon Scott single-hands his boat for a restorative sail from Long Beach to Sand Clemente Island. Anchoring in a small bay, John discovers an artifact that eventually leads to a sunken 19th Century ship. Later, sailing home, he comes upon a floundering sailboat and aids in the rescue of Dr. Sky Rowan. Jon and Sky gradually grow through conflicts and challenges. They discover more of one another, their families, and ancestral ties to California's past. Finally, a new era is made possible for the remnant of the Pomo Native American tribe from the middle 1800s.

About the Author:
Christopher S. Rubel, Rel. D., is a retired Licensed Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist in private practice in Claremont and Long Beach, California. He is also a retired ordained Episcopal priest, resident in the Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese. Until his novel, Lady of the Deep, his published writings have been articles and essays in magazines and psychological books. At eighty-two , having served in the Korean conflict and having been a long-haul truck driver, he writes from imagination and experiences gathered during years of living aboard his boat, racing and cruising in southern California, along with historical research accomplished during the writing of his novel.
Review:

Interesting and well written story containing romance, adventure, intrigue, and many twists and turns you don't see coming. Sailing, diving, injuries, rescue, red tape, are just the beginning. There is so much more.. family relationships, and history, once lost is found with Jon being the catalyst that brings it all together. The author, Christopher Rubel, really knows how to catch your interest and reel you in to love the characters.

In this story history profoundly alters the life of a contemporary sailor and those around him. This is a sailor's fantasy (maybe it's more than that) that includes love, intrigue, and a far-reaching redemption. Living on a boat docked in California's Long Beach Harbor during the 70s and 80s had a special flavor, and this story captures and delivers it.

Chris has written a very compelling story. I could not lay the book down! He has created a rousing novel about seeking a sunken treasure using real places and visuals located in southern California. Dana Point is exactly as he used it in the book. The character development and details (down to the type of wine served for dinner) are superb. I also learned a lot about sailing. It has a language of its own. Additionally Chris wove into the story some history of native Americans local to the surroundings as well as the Mission San Juan Capistrano. I enjoyed the book immensely and heartily recommend it for anyone who wants a "page turner" read!
