Just Love Me--with its title taken directly from a late 90s neon sign by Tracey Emin--reveals how complex and differentiated female identity constructions have become today. Classically assigned roles have broken down. Radical feminist positions of the 70s and 80s no longer make sense. But if much has changed since the late 60s, when feminist artists began to make their most prominent moves, many social and structural problems remain. The strategies and perspectives of women artists today--and, presumably, of women today--are here considered through a selection of works by an important group of contemporary (mostly) women artists: Matthew Barney, Rineke Dijkstra, Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum, Jonathan Horowitz, Sarah Jones, Mike Kelley, Karen Kilimnik, Sarah Lucas, Tracey Moffat, Cady Noland, Catherine Opie, Pipilotti Rist, Daniela Rossell, Cindy Sherman, Ann-Sofi Sidén, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gillian Wearing, Sue Williams and Andrea Zittel.

About the Author:
Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963. She has become one of the most important British contemporary artists, renowned for her deeply autobiographical artworks. In her solo exhibition I Need Art Like I Need God at the South London Gallery, 1997, Emin proved her ability to challenge what art is and presented an intimate insight to her life with the work 'Everyone I Have Ever Slept With'. Since then, Emin has had group and solo shows worldwide, including at the Tate Gallery, London; Lehmann Maupin, New York; Modern Art Oxford; Ferragmo Gallery, New York, and White Cube, London. Emin lives and works in London.

Matthew Barney (b. 1967) has exhibited all over the world, with solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum, among others. His work has been included in international group shows, including the Whitney Biennial and the Carnegie International. Barney was awarded the Europa 2000 prize at the 1993 Venice Biennale and was the first recipient of the Guggenheim Museum's Hugo Boss Prize in 1996.

Mike Kelley, one of the most controversial, prolific and influential figures in contemporary art, was born in 1954 in Detroit, Michigan, and earned a Bachelors degree from the University of Michigan and a Masters from California Institute of the Arts. His work, often wickedly humorous and drawing on both high art and the vernacular with distinctively American iconography, ranges across media such as drawing, painting, sculpture, music, performance, writing and video projects, the last often in collaboration with artists such as Paul McCarthy, Raymond Pettibon and Tony Oursler. In 1993, The Whitney Museum of American Art held a major retrospective of his work. He lives in Los Angeles, and is a member of the graduate faculty at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena.

Sarah Lucas was born in 1962 in London, where she continues to live and work. She studied at Goldsmiths College from 1984 to 87 and is now established as one of the most important British artists working today. Exhibitions of her work have been held at Gladstone Gallery in New York, the Tate Britain, Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin, and the Freud Museum in London. Lucas exhibited in the 2003 Venice Biennale.

Pipilotti Rist was born in Switzerland in 1962. She has been exhibiting her work since the mid-80s and has had solo exhibitions at many museums in North America, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; SITE Santa Fe; Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal. Her work is represented in all important collections of contemporary art. One of her most recent projects that garnered international renown was a public video installation in New York City's Times Square during spring 2000. She is represented in New York by Luhring Augustine Gallery.

Sue Williams was born in 1954 in Chicago Heights, Illinois. She studied at the California Institute of the Arts, receiving a BFA in 1976. She has had solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Art Institute as well as the Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva. Her work has been included in major group exhibitions, among them Open Ends at The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The American Century at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Pop Surrealism at The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Bad Girls at the ICA, London; and Birth of the Cool at the Kunsthaus, Zurich and the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg. She has been featured in the Whitney Biennials of 1993, 1995 and 1997.

Andrea Zittel was born in 1965 in Escondido in Southern California. She has had solo shows of her work mounted at Philomene Magers Projekte in Munich; the Sammlung Goetz in Munich; Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York; Gallery Side 2 in Tokyo, and Regen Projects in Los Angeles.

"Rineke Dijkstra was born in 1959 in Sittard, the Netherlands, and lives and works in Amsterdam. She has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Venice Biennale; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Photographers Gallery, London."

Catherine Opie has been the subject of one-person shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the St. Louis Art Museum. Her work is in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, among many others. She teaches photography at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Cindy Sherman was born in 1954. She began her Film Stills series at the age of 23, gaining early recognition, and has followed it with remarkable experiments in color photography. Her art has won her wide recognition and praise, and been collected and exhibited by major museums throughout the world since 1980--key early shows included a first survey at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, in 1982 and a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1987. Sherman is the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "genius" award, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, and the Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award for Visual Arts.

Sam Taylor-Wood graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1990. Since her first solo exhibition at White Cube in 1995, she has had numerous solo shows at venues including the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C., Fondazione Prada, Milan, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Hayward Gallery, London. In 1997 she received the Illy CafE Prize for Most Promising Young Artist at the Venice Biennale and was nominated for the Turner Prize.

Australian artist Tracey Moffatt studied visual communications at the Queensland College of Art, from which she graduated in 1982. She moved to Sydney, and then to New York, where she continues to live and work. Moffatt first gained critical acclaim for her short film Night Cries: A Rural Tragedy, which was selected for official competition at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. Her first feature film, Bedevil, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993. She has also made documentary films and music videos. She is represented in New York by Stux Gallery.
