An early eighteenth-century revised and enlarged edition of Tudor Humanist and royal tutor Roger Ascham's (1514/15-68) principal project. The schoolmaster consists of two books: the first devoted to the character of the ideal tutor and scholar, drawing heavily on Plato; the second champions the instruction of students through double translation in imitation of classical models, drawing upon the work of Cicero. Ascham discusses how best to ascertain the aptitude of a pupil and instil a love of learning. First published in 1570 by John Daye at the request of Ascham's widow, The Scholemaster went through five editions between 1570 and 1590, and has been repeatedly republished both in English and in translation. This sympathetic edition, edited by sometime master of Ilminster and Taunton grammar schools James Upton (1671-1749), was reprinted in 1743, 1761, and 1815. ESTC T139767. Size: 8vo.
