First edition. Recounts absorbing episodes taken from the pioneer days of the Albany Settlement (Eastern Cape, South Africa). Whilst the historical facts have been most carefully checked, this book reads like an adventure story, enlivened as it is by the exploits of such picturesque characters as the militant chaplain, the convict constable, the eccetric Scot, the Maid of Fort Beaufort, the settler edestined to become "Emperor of America", and many other amazing personalities.
