FIRST EDITION. Coloured armorial front.; sl. spotting. Contemp. half black calf, maroon label; sl. rubbed. Armorial bookplate of F. Chamberlin. With two pages of typed notes signed 'F.S.R.' tipped on to leading. f.e.p. & initial blank. v.g. A scandalous publication of 'arrant nonsense' including 'the bigamy of George III, the accountable and sudden death of George III's eldest brother, and the infamous and cold-blooded murders of the Princess Charlotte, and of Caroline, Queen of England'. Phillips was convicted for libelling the Duke of Cumberland but reissued the work under a new title, 'The secret history of the court of England' and named Lady Anne as the Author. This copy belonged to the academic F. Stroud Read, his notes asserting that The Authentic Records and The Secret History were probably published without the consent of Lady Anne and consisted of Josiah Phillips' embellishment of 'some indiscreet scribblings'.
