Brieux's play was turned into a novel by Upton Sinclair entitled Damaged Goods. A Novel About The Victims of Syphilis. The play, which was initially prohibited in France, is considered to be a didactic propaganda piece to encourage open discussion of venereal disease and remove the taboos and of course also the shame. As such, it was written in the form of a dialogue with Dr Fournier. One commentator thought that Les Avarie?s represented '.an essential stage in the spread of venereal fear among the public! ( p-270 Alain Corbin ? Women For Hire: Prostitution and Sexuality in France after 1850, 1996). The French trade suggests that it was placed under censorship. 218981.
