About this Item
First edition. 60 pages. Inscribed in ink to the front endpaper: "With the Authors' Compliments To L. L. Otter-Barry, Esq.". The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's quarter white cloth, lettered in black to the spine, over brown paper covered boards, illustrated and lettered in black, blue and yellow, the boards are quite marked, bumped rubbed and stained, with labels for Bullens of Elstree to the front and rear boards, which are beginning to peel off. The text block is slightly toned, marked and dusty, with occasional spots of foxing. From the archives of the RSA Insurance Group with their barcode strip to the front pastedown. A post-WW1 treatise on aviation insurance, though in reality mainly a treatise on aviation, covering biplanes, monoplanes, seaplanes and airships, with emphasis on the considerable developments made during the war, detailing the various factors, human, machine, atmospheric and ground-based, their attendant risks and the challenges in estimating them, written in a pithy, engaging anecdotal style. Both Lewis senior, a civilian pilot and his WW1 flying Ace Son, Gwilym worked in insurance, and the latter wrote books on aviation safety. Rare in commerce.
