Limited edition of 100 copies. Printed boards, small 4to, xxii, 316 , 2 pp incl. frontispiece, facs. Approximately 100 entries. Wise's Bibliography of Borrow is one of the most extravagant of his exercises in self-promotion - when it was, after 70 years, finally superseded by Collie & Fraser's new bibliography, the authors noted that "Part of the purpose of Wise s bibliography was to give prominence to a set of pamphlets which he himself had produced and to which 160 pages are devoted from a total of 316." These are chiefly legitimate printings of Borrow's minor manuscript translations, of which the copyrights were acquired by Clement Shorter after Borrow's death. Presentation copy inscribed and signed by Wise on the half-title: "Percy Spalding, Esq. with sincere regards from Thos. J. Wise"; stamped name 'Percy Spalding' on front free endpaper . Percy Spalding successfully managed the publishers Chatto & Windus for some years, notwithstanding the claim of Frank Swinnerton that he had "a great, even sublime, ignorance of literature, which he never attempted to conceal". Spine torn with some loss in three places, and detached at rear joint forming a flap, boards darkened and somewhat scuffed. Seller Inventory # ABE-51012
