First edition, signed limited issue, number 95 of 100 hardback copies signed by the contributors Seamus Heaney, Louis le Brocquy, Thomas Kinsella, Seamus Deane, Paul Durcan, Patrick Galvin, and Francis Stuart. This protest anthology brings together 55 writers and artists appealing against the false conviction of six Irish men over the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings. "These men have served a dreadful sentence. The protests have come in thick and fast in the last few years and still, in November 1990, they lie in jail. It is to be hoped that this volume will appear after the release of these men" (pp. 10-11). A few months following publication, their guilty verdict was found "unsafe and unsatisfactory" by the Court of Appeal and they walked free on 14 March 1991 after 16 years in prison. The anthology contains, in English and sometimes in Irish, poetry, essays, illustrations, extracts from full works, and an appendix printing legal resolutions and appeals. The trade issue was published as a paperback. A further 27 hardback copies were reserved for presentation, including to the Birmingham Six: Hugh Callaghan, Patrick Joseph Hill, Gerard Hunter, Richard McIlkenny, William Power, and John Walker. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, buff endpapers. With dust jacket, front panel with "Condemned Man" illustration by le Brocquy. With 5 full-page illustrations by Gertrude Degehardt and 2 by Volker Wilczek. Minor rubbing to unclipped dust jacket: a fine copy in near-fine jacket. Seller Inventory # 174565
