Item description from seller

Signed limited edition, number 331 of 575 copies signed and numbered by the artist, here handsomely bound by Bayntun. The work includes ballads based on Francis James Child's English and Scottish Popular Ballads, such as "The Twa Corbies" and "Clerk Colvill". One contemporary review celebrated how "illustrated gift books have regained this year all their pre-war sumptuousness. With memories of war paper still vivid in the mind it restores one's faith in the possibility of a return to the normal in other things to handle a volume like 'Some British Ballads'" (Dublin Evening Telegraph, 24 December 1919). Latimore & Haskell pp. 51-52; Riall, p. 137. Quarto (276 x 220 mm). Colour frontispiece and 15 colour plates, all tipped in and with red-captioned tissue guards as issued, illustrations in text, by Rackham. Contemporary blue morocco by Bayntun, spine lettered in gilt, compartments with gilt floral device enclosed by decorative frame, covers ruled and panelled with gilt floral cornerpieces, gilt dotted roll to board edges, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Bookseller's ticket on front free endpaper verso. Spine sunned, gilt bright: a near-fine copy.…
