Three volumes, 8vo, pp. [vi], iv, 364; 176, [2], 181-443; [iv], 410, [54] index; with engraved portrait frontispiece in volume I (included in collation), and vignettes and headpieces by Simon Gribelin; occasional discolouration, notably at beginning of volume III, but generally clean copy; in contemporary panelled calf, spines gilt, red and green morocco labels (one missing on volume II, and partly missing on volume I); spine cracked in volume I. Fifth edition of this important work of 18th century philosophy: Shaftesbury had been the pupil of John Locke, and his work was influential both in Britain and on the continent. The graphic element of this book the vignettes signed by Simon Gribelin were largely overseen by Shaftesbury himself, before his early death. This is the first edition to include the Letter concerning Design, which concludes volume III. Provenance. Inscription 'TWolfe' on each title page; each volume also has an early bookplate probably of the same family: the crest is a wolf's head, gorged, and the same features on the shield; the motto is 'Pro Patria Mori'. This is probably the Wolfe family who lived at Forenaghts, co. Kildare: one occasionally sees books with the inscription of Philpot Wolfe (1726-75), from this family.
