Jack Gelber, 9 Sept 1963, if this book is found first read other inscription.' Very nice copy in lightly worn dust jacket, rear panel lightly dust-soiled, with a couple of very small chips around head of spine. The author's first book, a landmark in post-war American theatre. Together with a second printing of his second play, 'The Apple' (New York: Grove Press, [1961]. Printed wrappers. Spine and inner edge of wrappers browned, else a very good copy), inscribed: '9 Sept. 1963. Mostyn-Owen's house. If anyone reads this inscription please call the police. This book has been swiped by the reader. I do hope you don't find this for many months. When we meet again tell me if I've hidden both books well. Jack Gelber'. The recipients were William Mostyn-Owen and his first wife, Gaia Servadio. An art historian who had worked with Bernard Berenson at I Tatti during the 1950s, Mostyn-Owen was at Christie's by the time of the above inscriptions; his Italian-born wife would later become a writer and journalist. Feltrinelli's joint Italian translation of the two plays had been published earlier in 1963.
