Presentation copy, inked inscription to recto of FFEP: 'To my dear nephew Douglas Loch, from his affectionate uncle Ernest Villiers. April 1912'. A privately printed memoir of Ernest Villiers (1838-1921), sometime aide-de-camp to the Governor of Madras Sir William Denison (1804-1871). Intended solely for the eyes of his children, Villiers' heartfelt memoir is frequently amusing and often self-deprecating. The bulk of his recollections are devoted to his three years in India under Denison, 'a very clever strong man' , of whom her writes affectionately. Following his return to England in 1863, Villiers was stationed in Ireland, where he served under commander-in-chief Sir Hugh Rose (1801-1885). He retired from the Army in 1874.
