Add to basket(London: Published for THE CRIME CLUB Ltd by W Collins Sons and Co Ltd 1932). First UK Edition. Publisher's orange boards with black lettering to the spine and front board. Map-style end-papers. SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION. A VG+ copy (spine slightly faded and spine tips softened) in like dustwrapper which is priced 7/6 to the spine (as called for). The book is inscribed by the Author to the half-title: To/ M. Georges Gillard/ With the Author's compliments,/ November 1932". Monsieur Georges Gillard was a French translator known to Crofts as the translator of "The Starvel Tragedy" (La Tragedie de Starvel). The dustwrapper is complete with an almost-invisible closed tear to the top left-hand corner of the front panel (historically repaired on the verso with a strip of tape). There are also unnecessary tape repairs (on the verso) to the head and tail of the spine with a small infill at the bottom right-hand corner of the spine. An excellent police procedural. "The story is set on Southern Railways South Coast Route and draws on FWC's own experience as a railway engineer. A section of the railway is being widened, involving massive earthworks and the like. One of the engineers is found on the line having been run over by a train. Was it accident, suicide or murder? The inquest decided it was an accident but subsequent evidence threw doubt on this verdict and Inspector French was called in to Investigate" (GoodReads). Uncommon in dustwrapper and, even more so, inscribed by the Author. Photographs/scans available upon request.
