About this Item
The original typescripts of Sharpe's first two novels: his debut, Riotous Assembly, here under its initial title, Els, and its sequel, Indecent Exposure. They were published by Secker & Warburg in 1971 and 1973 respectively. Sharpe's Cambridge address is printed on the title page of the typescript for Riotous Assembly, which he wrote in just three weeks, together with his telephone number and the label of his literary agent, Curtis Brown Ltd. Accompanying the typescripts is a first edition of Indecent Exposure, signed by the author on the title page on a bookplate. Sharpe's experiences in apartheid-era South Africa over a decade as a social worker, teacher, and photographer shaped much of his writing. His anti-apartheid play, The South African, which was staged at a theatre in London, led to his expulsion from South Africa in 1961. Original typescript of Els (later Riotous Assembly): 340 double-spaced pages, carbon copy with a few corrections in manuscript, pages stapled together in chapters. Original typescript of Indecent Exposure: 342 double-spaced pages, carbon copy with a few corrections in manuscript. Both typescripts housed in cardboard boxes. With Indecent Exposure, octavo. Original black boards, title to spine gilt. With dust jacket. Typescripts: first pages a little marked, toned, and lightly creased, otherwise in excellent condition. Indecent Exposure: spine rolled, boards slightly bowed; a very good copy in the bright jacket.
